Punjab Set to Launch Provincial Airline ‘Air Punjab’ in April 2026

The Punjab government is gearing up to introduce Pakistan’s first provincial airline, Air Punjab, with inaugural flights slated for April 2026, according to recent official statements and media reports.

The initiative, first announced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in April 2025, aims to enhance domestic connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and provide reliable air travel options within the province and beyond. In its initial phase, the airline will acquire seven aircraft to focus exclusively on domestic routes for at least two years before pursuing international expansion.

Key features of the project include a fully commercial model, with no dedicated VIP aircraft. Officials have emphasized that even government functionaries, including the Chief Minister, will pay for seats like regular passengers. The existing Chief Minister’s helicopter will be integrated into the fleet to support operations without additional exclusive purchases for official use.

The announcement has gained fresh momentum amid recent social media posts and reports highlighting preparations, including fleet-building efforts. A recent controversy arose over the reported acquisition of a luxury Gulfstream G500** business jet valued at approximately Rs10 billion and currently US-registered, which Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari clarified is part of the broader Air Punjab fleet-building process, comprising both purchased and leased aircraft, rather than a personal or exclusive VIP asset.

The government positions Air Punjab as a province-owned enterprise designed to operate efficiently and contribute to regional development without straining national resources. Recruitment for key management roles has been underway since late 2025, with operations expected to commence following final regulatory approvals.

While details on specific routes, ticket pricing, and exact aircraft types remain pending official release, the project has sparked public discussion on social media, with some users expressing excitement over improved travel options and others questioning priorities amid economic challenges.
