Sindh Authorities Foil Alleged BLA Plot to Recruit Minor Girl as Suicide Bomber

Sindh Interior Minister Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar announced on Sunday that law enforcement agencies had thwarted a major terrorist plot by the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), rescuing a minor girl who was allegedly being groomed as a suicide bomber through social media radicalization.

Addressing a press conference at the Central Police Office in Karachi alongside senior police officials, including Additional IG CTD, Lanjar described the incident as a “heinous act” by outlawed groups targeting vulnerable young Baloch girls. “These banned organizations are involved in the inhumane practice of turning underage girls into suicide attackers,” he said, adding that timely intelligence-led operations prevented a potential catastrophe in the city.

The minister highlighted the role of social media in propaganda and recruitment, stating that anti-state elements were brainwashing youth online. “The enemy is using our children against us,” Lanjar warned, crediting security forces for saving Karachi from significant destruction.

Additional Inspector General CTD revealed details of the operation, explaining that a BLA handler contacted the girl via Instagram. The girl, from Balochistan, was sent to Karachi under false pretenses. On December 25, during a sensitive intelligence-based operation, she was taken into safe custody after appearing suspicious at a police checkpoint. The handler failed to reach the designated location due to security checks, exposing the plot.

Authorities played a video statement from the girl (with her identity concealed), in which she described how hate content repeatedly appeared on her social media feeds, leading to increased contacts sharing links and speeches. “Gradually, it all started seeming true,” she said, noting that WhatsApp groups portrayed BLA actions as acts of bravery. “They instilled in my mind that sacrificing life was the greatest purpose. Today, I realize what destruction I was heading toward. Sacrificing women and girls is not Baloch identity.”

The girl’s mother also appeared in the video, stating that they decided to speak out in the public interest to prevent other girls from falling into similar traps.

Officials emphasized the need for stricter measures against hate and terrorist content on social media platforms. The BLA, a separatist group designated as a terrorist organization, has previously claimed responsibility for attacks targeting security forces and Chinese interests in Pakistan.
