Trump Administration Imposes New Tariffs on Pakistan and 59 Other Countries
The Trump administration has announced fresh import tariffs on goods from 60 trading partners, including Pakistan, as part of a broad push to combat forced labor in global supply chains. The measures, unveiled by the U.S. Trade Representative’s office, replace an earlier temporary global duty and cover approximately 99% of U.S. imports.
Under the new tariffs, implemented under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, many countries, including Pakistan, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, the European Union, India, and others, will face additional duties of 10% on affected imports. A higher rate of 12.5% applies to several other nations deemed to have made less progress in addressing forced labor issues.
Pakistani exports to the United States, particularly textiles and apparel, are expected to be hit by the 10% tariff. The U.S. Trade Representative determined that the 60 countries have failed to adequately prohibit and enforce bans on imports of goods produced with forced labor, creating an unfair burden on American businesses and workers.
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters view it as a necessary step to enforce fair trade and human rights standards, while critics warn of higher costs for American consumers and potential strains on international alliances.
