Trump Unveils New Air Force One: $400 Million Boeing 747 Gifted by Qatar
President Donald Trump on Friday introduced the United States’ new Air Force One, a luxurious Boeing 747-8 jet donated by the government of Qatar and valued at approximately $400 million.
The aircraft, which has undergone extensive modifications by the U.S. Air Force, is set to join the presidential fleet as a temporary or bridge replacement for the aging VC-25A planes. Military officials confirmed it will soon be ready for operational use, potentially in time for major national events this summer.
Qatar provided the jumbo jet as an “unconditional gift” last year. The U.S. covered the costs of retrofitting it with top-secret communications equipment and other presidential security features, while retaining much of its original lavish interior.
The announcement coincides with the retirement of one of the longtime Boeing VC-25A aircraft that has served presidents for over 35 years. White House officials bid farewell to the veteran plane amid preparations for the new arrival.
The donation has sparked bipartisan concerns over ethics, national security, and foreign influence. Trump previously dismissed criticism, stating it would be “stupid” to reject such an offer. The plane is expected to be transferred to Trump’s future presidential library after his term.
This development marks a significant upgrade in presidential air transport capabilities. The modified jet, sometimes referred to as the VC-25B Bridge aircraft, was converted with assistance from L3Harris and has completed necessary testing.
