Guterres Arrives in Islamabad for Key Pakistan Talks

ISLAMABAD (Radio Pakistan) — October 06, 2026: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has arrived in Islamabad for an official visit focused on Pakistan’s engagement with the United Nations, regional and international developments, and the country’s efforts in peace, security and disaster preparedness.
Guterres is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir received the UN chief upon his arrival, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Office.

During his stay, Guterres is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. The meetings are expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on regional and international developments as well as Pakistan-UN cooperation.
The UN chief will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). The mission has been involved in observing developments along the Line of Control and the working arrangements established under relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Another major part of the programme is a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority. The UN has said Guterres will review Pakistan’s progress in strengthening disaster preparedness and resilience since his previous visit to areas affected by devastating floods.

The visit also comes against the backdrop of Pakistan’s recent diplomatic engagement on regional tensions. UN officials and Pakistani authorities have previously discussed Islamabad’s efforts to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran, with Guterres having expressed UN support for Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts.
In an earlier assessment of Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement, the Foreign Office said the UN chief had conveyed the international community’s “deep appreciation and support” for Pakistan’s role in regional and international peace and stability.

The Foreign Office has described the current visit as an opportunity to reaffirm Pakistan’s longstanding cooperation with the United Nations and exchange views on international and regional developments. It also highlights Islamabad’s stated commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the UN Charter.

The visit is particularly significant as Guterres approaches the end of his tenure as UN secretary-general. His engagement in Islamabad is expected to cover Pakistan’s relationship with the UN, regional security concerns, diplomatic efforts and disaster-risk preparedness.
Guterres last visited Pakistan in 2022, when he travelled to areas affected by catastrophic flooding. His return includes a renewed focus on disaster resilience alongside diplomatic and security discussions.
