President Zardari Reaffirms Support for Free Press on National Newspapers Readership Day

President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday reaffirmed his commitment to a free press and highlighted the important role of newspapers in strengthening democracy, protecting citizens’ rights and holding decision-makers accountable.

In his message on National Newspapers Readership Day, September 25, 2026, the President said the press serves as the “Fourth Estate” by informing citizens about their rights and responsibilities towards the state and society.

President Zardari observed that although diverse news media were expanding rapidly, newspapers continued to play an important role in shaping public opinion and promoting an informed citizenry.

He noted that newspaper readership was no longer restricted to printed editions, as newspapers were increasingly reaching audiences through digital platforms and other forms of online access.

The President expressed concern over the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, targeted dissemination of fake news and disinformation campaigns, saying these developments were influencing social values, cultural outlook and public behaviour.

In this changing media environment, he stressed the importance of credible and balanced reporting backed by responsible editorial oversight.

President Zardari urged Pakistan’s youth to develop the habit of reading newspapers, whether in print or through digital platforms, while also acquiring modern technological skills.

He appreciated the impartial and balanced role of newspapers in strengthening democracy and called upon editorial boards to continue giving due attention to socio-economic, religious and political issues, as well as foreign policy, in the broader interest of the state and society.

The President expressed hope that the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) would continue contributing to informed national discourse and enhancing public understanding of regional and global developments.

He also assured the press of his continued support for maintaining high standards of journalism and creating an enabling environment for a free press.
