LOS ANGELES (BBC) — September 30, 2026: Taylor Swift has become the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history after winning Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” taking her career VMA total to 33.
The award, for the video from her album “The Life of a Showgirl,” moved Swift past Beyoncé's previous record. Swift also received the inaugural Artist Director Honors award for her work on “Opalite,” including writing and directing the video. Reuters confirmed Swift's record-breaking 33rd VMA and her Video of the Year victory.

During her acceptance speech, Swift dedicated the award to Dolly Parton, calling her “the ultimate showgirl” and saying, “I think we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time.”
Swift also premiered the music video for “Patient Zero,” featuring actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. The song is among four new tracks included on “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.”
Madonna, who entered the ceremony with the highest number of nominations, also collected several honours. She won Artist of the Year, Best Dance and Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love.” The collaboration was also listed among the official VMA winners.
Reflecting on her long association with the VMAs, Madonna said, “Most of you were probably not born when I performed at the very first VMAs 43 years ago.”

She also spoke about her recent creative journey, saying, “I spent the last year and a half finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music that I wanted to make.”
Madonna opened the ceremony with a performance featuring Sabrina Carpenter and an appearance by Charli XCX. She later shared the story of how she contacted Carpenter directly after not receiving a response from the singer's team about a possible collaboration.

Carpenter confirmed that her team does respond to messages, adding: “But I respond faster. So direct line to me is always the best way to get in contact.”
BLACKPINK's Lisa also made VMA history by winning Best Pop for her solo song “Dream,” featuring Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi. Official MTV results list Lisa as the winner of the category.

Lisa, whose full name is Lalisa Manobal, thanked her fans while accepting the award and said she “wouldn't be here without you guys.”
The ceremony also featured performances and appearances from several major names in music. Sienna Spiro won Best New Artist, while PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson received the Best Art Direction award for “Stateside.”
BTS won Best Group and Song of the Year for “Swim,” while Olivia Rodrigo's “The Cure” won Best Alternative. The official MTV results also list Madonna's “Confessions II – The Film” as the winner in Best Long Form Video and Best Dance.
The ceremony was hosted by Snoop Dogg and included tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael. Swift's record-setting victory, Madonna's multiple honours and Lisa's Best Pop win were among the major developments from this year's MTV Video Music Awards.
