AJK Police Arrest Banned JAAC Chief Shaukat Nawaz Mir

Authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have arrested Shaukat Nawaz Mir, the prominent leader of the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), also known as the Awami Action Committee.

Mir, who had been a key public face of the committee amid recent protests in the region, was taken into custody as part of an ongoing crackdown on the banned group. The JAAC was outlawed under anti-terrorism laws earlier, with authorities accusing it of involvement in anti-state activities and funding channels.

Several other JAAC affiliates have also been detained in recent operations across AJK districts, including Rawalakot. Officials claim the arrests target networks allegedly involved in harassment, intimidation, and collecting funds from overseas sources.

This development comes amid heightened tensions following protests in AJK, where the group had mobilized public demonstrations demanding rights and reforms. Mir had previously gone into hiding and made strong allegations against authorities regarding a crackdown on activists.
