Anti-India Protests: Massive March Towards Indian Assistant High Commission in Rajshahi, Visa Centre Shut

Tensions escalated in Bangladesh’s Rajshahi city as anti-India protesters marched towards the Indian Assistant High Commission, prompting authorities to shut down the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Rajshahi and Khulna due to security concerns.

The demonstration was organized by a group called “July 36 Manch Against Indian Hegemony,” protesting alleged Indian interference. The march began around noon from Bhadra Mor in the city. As protesters advanced towards the Assistant High Commission’s premises, police erected barricades and attempted to halt their progress, leading to scuffles as demonstrators tried to push through.

According to Bangladeshi media reports, police managed to bring the situation under control and prevented protesters from reaching the mission building. However, social media posts, videos, and some international reports portrayed the crowd as highly aggressive, with claims of “Islamist radicals” intent on attacking the Indian mission.

A notice on the official IVAC website stated: “Due to the current security situation, IVAC Rajshahi and Khulna will remain closed today (18.12.2025). Applicants with appointments today will be provided new slots later.”

The incident follows recent protests in Dhaka towards the Indian High Commission and India’s summoning of a Bangladeshi diplomat. New Delhi has urged Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure the security of its missions.

Anti-India sentiments have risen in Bangladesh since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, contributing to ongoing diplomatic strains between the two neighbors. Authorities from both sides emphasize cooperation, and the situation remains under close watch.
