The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to reinstate Babar Azam as Test captain, bringing an end to uncertainty surrounding the red-ball leadership after Shan Masood’s challenging tenure.

The appointment comes despite a lean period for Pakistan in Test cricket over the past three years, during which the team has struggled for consistency and results. Board sources confirmed that Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has approved the move, with Babar agreeing to take on the role ahead of key World Test Championship commitments.

Shan Masood’s captaincy faced heavy criticism following Pakistan’s series defeat to Bangladesh, including a heavy loss in the opening Test. Reports indicate Masood stepped down after a difficult spell that yielded limited success in 16 Tests.

Babar, one of Pakistan’s premier batters, previously captained the Test side between 2021 and 2023, leading in 20 matches. He has amassed more than 4,400 Test runs at an average of around 42.67, delivering several notable performances under pressure.
