Los Angeles (Variety) — July 8, 2026: Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic “The Odyssey” has earned widespread praise from members of the film press following its first media screening, with early reactions describing the film as visually breathtaking, emotionally engaging and one of the director’s most ambitious productions to date.
Adapted from Homer’s classic Greek epic, the film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, chronicling the legendary king’s perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The ensemble cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo and Elliot Page.

Entertainment journalists who attended the screening praised both the film’s technical achievements and its performances. While full reviews remain under embargo, the initial reactions have been overwhelmingly positive.
Collider critic Peri Nemiroff described the production as: “A filmmaking feast… a grand and gripping rendition of Homer’s epic, and one that feels uniquely Christopher Nolan.”
Film journalist Simon Thompson also praised the production, writing: “Flawless filmmaking, every inch as epic as you’d expect.”

Several critics singled out Matt Damon’s portrayal of Odysseus as one of the strongest performances of his career, while Robert Pattinson’s performance as Antinous also drew widespread acclaim. Although the majority of reactions were highly favorable, some reviewers noted minor pacing issues during portions of the film, while still praising its concluding act and overall cinematic impact. Critics emphasized that these comments represent early impressions rather than comprehensive reviews.
“The Odyssey” also marks a technical milestone for Nolan, becoming the first narrative feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Nolan previously revealed that the production used more than two million feet of film, reflecting the project’s large scale and technical ambition.
Speaking previously about adapting Homer’s ancient poem, Nolan explained his motivation: “As a filmmaker, you’re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven’t been done before.”
