The federal government’s total debt has risen by a staggering Rs18,832 billion over a period of 28 months, according to official documents released by the State Bank of Pakistan.

The sharp increase was recorded between March 2024 and June 2026. During this period, the government’s domestic (local) debt jumped by Rs16,766 billion, while external debt increased by Rs2,066 billion.

The combined rise averages more than Rs22.40 billion every single day, highlighting the rapid pace at which the country’s public debt burden has grown.

State Bank figures indicate that the bulk of the additional borrowing has come from domestic sources, which now account for the overwhelming majority of the new debt accumulated in the 28-month period.

The data underlines the significant expansion in the federal government’s liabilities in a relatively short timeframe, with both local and foreign borrowing contributing to the overall surge.
