France Seriously Evaluating India’s Pinaka Rocket System for Artillery Needs

France is actively assessing India’s indigenously developed Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) system as a potential solution to bolster its long-range artillery capabilities, according to recent reports citing French media and defense sources.

The interest stems from the French Army’s urgent need to replace or supplement its aging M270 LRU (Lance Roquettes Unitaires) systems, which are nearing the end of their service life around 2027. Depleted NATO stockpiles due to ongoing support for Ukraine, combined with delays in domestic programs like the FLP-T (Frappe Longue Portée Terrestre), Thundart, and Foudre, aiming for ranges beyond 150 km but not expected until 2026-2030, have accelerated the search for interim options.

A senior French Army officer, Brigadier General Stephane Richou, confirmed in late 2024 that France was evaluating the Pinaka among 3–4 top international contenders, stating it aligns with requirements for a mobile, high-volume fire system.

Demonstrations and live firings in India were deemed satisfactory, with further high-level interest expressed by French Army Chief General Pierre Schill during a New Delhi visit in 2025.

The Pinaka, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by firms like Tata Advanced Systems and Larsen & Toubro, features multiple variants: standard models reach up to 75–90 km with guided munitions, while recent successful tests of the Mk-III guided variant achieved 120 km in late 2025. France has reportedly sought a customized version potentially extending to 150 km to better match its operational demands.

Recent discussions on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), reference French media reports describing the evaluation as “serious,” though some analysts note range limitations (current max 120 km vs. desired 150 km+) and view the move partly as geopolitical leverage in broader Indo-French negotiations, such as those involving Rafale jets or joint projects.

France is also weighing alternatives like the South Korean K239 Chunmoo for its quick availability, ITAR-free status and compatibility with NATO standards. Domestic or European solutions remain prioritized for long-term strategic autonomy, but Pinaka’s cost-effectiveness, rapid salvo capability, and proven performance position it as a strong near-term contender.

No final procurement decision has been announced, but a deal, if realized, would represent a landmark first for a NATO/EU member acquiring major Indian weaponry, building on India’s growing defense export profile and deepening military ties with France.

Defense experts highlight that while Pinaka excels in area saturation fire, competing systems like HIMARS or K239 offer greater precision for deep strikes, aligning more closely with some NATO doctrines. The evaluation underscores India’s rising stature in global arms markets amid shifting supply chain dynamics.
