Iran Launches Ballistic Missiles at Israel in Retaliation for U.S.-Israeli Strikes

Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles toward Israel early Saturday in apparent retaliation for a major joint U.S.-Israeli preemptive strike on Iranian targets, including sites in Tehran and other cities.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed detecting incoming ballistic missiles from Iran, triggering nationwide air raid sirens across northern and central Israel, including Tel Aviv, Haifa, and surrounding areas. Residents were instructed to seek shelter in safe rooms or protected spaces as Israel’s multi-layered air defense systems — including Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow — activated to intercept the projectiles.

Initial reports indicate “dozens” of missiles were fired, with Iranian state-affiliated media claiming between 30 and 75 in the opening wave. Some sources also mentioned possible accompanying drones. Explosions were heard in parts of northern Israel as interceptors engaged threats, though early assessments from emergency services, including Magen David Adom, reported no injuries or significant damage in populated areas. At least one missile reportedly struck an open field.

The Iranian response came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced in a video address that American forces had begun “major combat operations” against Iran, vowing to dismantle its ballistic missile industry, navy, and nuclear capabilities. Trump described the strikes as aimed at preventing Tehran from developing weapons that could threaten U.S. allies, troops abroad, and potentially the American homeland — claims that some U.S. intelligence sources have previously described as not fully supported for intercontinental range.

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz labeled the initial attack on Iran a “preemptive” operation to neutralize existential threats, including missile production and launch sites. Explosions were reported in Tehran and other locations such as Isfahan, Qom, and Tabriz, with smoke visible over parts of the capital. Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency, closed its airspace, and braced for further Iranian retaliation.

No official casualty figures from the Iranian side have been released, and details of damage to targeted facilities remain limited. The situation continues to develop rapidly, with potential for additional missile waves or broader involvement.
