Pakistan’s military intelligence and security establishment has witnessed a significant reshuffle in September 2026, involving several Major Generals with experience in field formations, Rangers, Coast Guards and intelligence assignments.
At the centre of the changes is Maj Gen Adil Iftikhar Warriach appointed Director General Military Intelligence (DG-MI), replacing Maj Gen Wajid Aziz. Warriach, from the 92nd PMA Long Course and 34 Azad Kashmir Regiment, was serving as GOC 7 Infantry Division at Miranshah. His movement from an operational formation to MI is particularly noteworthy because of his experience in an area with significant counter-terrorism responsibilities.

Maj Gen Muhammad Shamriaz Khan, an artillery officer of the 90th PMA Long Course, has been moved from DG Pakistan Rangers Sindh to DG-S, ISI. His career includes substantial exposure to internal security and paramilitary operations.
Maj Gen Sajid Mehmood from the 95th PMA Long Course and 32 Punjab Regiment, has been appointed DG-Z, ISI. He was among the officers promoted to Major General in July 2026. The precise responsibilities of the S and Z directorates are not fully documented in official public sources, so claims regarding their specific operational portfolios should be treated cautiously.
Another important appointment is Maj Gen Jawwad Riaz from the 90th PMA Long Course and 11 Baloch Regiment, who has moved from DG Pakistan Coast Guards to DG-P, ISI. His successor at the Coast Guards is Maj Gen Atif Rafique.

WHAT DOES THIS SHUFFLE INDICATE?
The appointments bring together officers with experience in military intelligence, counter-terrorism, internal security, border management and field command.
The timing is also significant. Pakistan has been dealing simultaneously with security challenges along the Afghanistan border, Balochistan and the internal-security environment, while maintaining close attention to developments on the eastern front.
The reshuffle should therefore be viewed primarily as an effort to align senior leadership with evolving operational and intelligence requirements. However, it would be premature to conclude that every appointment represents a specific change of policy or a particular external operation.
Interestingly, the changes follow the earlier transfer of Maj Gen Faisal Naseer, the ISI’s DG-C/Internal Wing, to NACTA. Dawn reported that DG-C heads the Internal Wing and is considered one of the ISI’s most important senior positions.
Taken together, these appointments represent a substantial movement of experienced field and security commanders into Pakistan’s intelligence architecture. Their subsequent performance and the assignments given to them will provide a clearer indication of the strategic priorities behind this major reshuffle.
