LOS ANGELES (People) — September 11, 2026: Nicole Kidman has opened up about the emotional experience behind one of the biggest achievements of her career, recalling that she felt deeply lonely after winning her first Oscar in 2003.
Kidman, 59, discussed the experience during an appearance on the Therapuss podcast with host Jake Shane on September 10 while promoting Practical Magic 2. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for portraying writer Virginia Woolf in The Hours.

Looking back on the night, Kidman said the professional high point did not necessarily translate into personal happiness.
“I was beyond lonely,” she said. “I had the pinnacle of my success, and I went home and was so lonely.”
At the time of her Oscar victory, Kidman had already divorced actor Tom Cruise, whom she married in 1990. Their divorce was finalized in 2001, two years before her Oscar win.

Kidman said having her parents with her did not completely fill the personal void she felt that night. She recalled wondering where the person was with whom she could share such an important moment.

“It was one of the most profound moments where I went, ‘I’ve got to get a life,’” Kidman recalled, describing the contrast between holding Hollywood’s top acting prize and feeling alone.
She characterized her emotional state at the time with one word: “Weird.”
The actress also remembered wanting the comfort and closeness of a partner rather than another industry celebration, saying she wished she could have been “wrapped in somebody’s arms” and surrounded by something that felt like her real life.

Kidman has previously discussed the same period in her life. She also recalled feeling uncomfortable at the traditional Vanity Fair Oscar party following her win. Although she initially wanted to skip the event, people encouraged her to attend with her Academy Award.
Kidman said she found the experience overwhelming and recalled being emotional and shaking while carrying the Oscar through the party. She later said she wished she had been able to enjoy the achievement more.

The actress has since experienced major changes in both her personal and professional life. She married country singer Keith Urban in 2006, and they have two daughters.
