The world is going through a major geopolitical transformation. The old balance of power is changing and new centres of influence are emerging. For Pakistan this changing international environment is both a challenge and an opportunity.
The country can no longer afford a foreign policy based only on traditional alliances. It needs a practical approach that protects national interests while keeping diplomatic doors open to all major powers.

Pakistan has historically maintained important relations with the United States and China. At present its relationship with China remains central to its strategic and economic interests, while relations with Washington continue to matter for trade, security and international financial institutions. The challenge for Islamabad is to maintain these relationships without becoming excessively dependent on any single power.
The changing global order also gives Pakistan an opportunity to strengthen ties with Russia, the Gulf countries, Central Asian states and other emerging powers. Recent diplomatic developments have shown that Pakistan can play a constructive role beyond its traditional regional concerns. Its involvement in efforts to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran has increased its diplomatic visibility and demonstrated the potential of middle powers in international diplomacy.

However foreign policy cannot be separated from regional security. Afghanistan remains one of Pakistan’s most serious challenges. Islamabad has repeatedly raised concerns about militant activity originating from Afghan territory and has called for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan. At the same time Pakistan needs a diplomatic strategy that combines security measures with political engagement and economic cooperation.
Relations with India remain another major concern. Kashmir, water security and the absence of sustained dialogue continue to create tension between the two nuclear armed neighbours. Pakistan must defend its national interests firmly but it should also support diplomatic engagement because lasting regional stability cannot be achieved through confrontation alone.
The real strength of Pakistan’s foreign policy will ultimately depend on its economic strength. Diplomatic influence becomes difficult to sustain when a country remains economically vulnerable. Foreign investment, exports, energy security and economic stability therefore need to be treated as important instruments of foreign policy.

Pakistan stands at an important point in its diplomatic journey. The emerging world order is not simply a competition between major powers. It is also creating space for middle powers to shape regional outcomes. Pakistan should use this opportunity carefully by pursuing balanced relations, strengthening its economy, improving regional connectivity and placing national interest above temporary geopolitical preferences.

The future of Pakistani foreign policy should not be about choosing one camp against another. It should be about building enough economic and diplomatic strength to engage with everyone on the basis of mutual respect and national interest. In a rapidly changing world, strategic independence will belong not to those who choose sides quickly but to those who have the strength and wisdom to choose their interests wisely.
