Pakistan Ranked World’s Most Polluted Country in 2025 as Toxic Smog Chokes Millions

Pakistan topped global air pollution rankings last year, with average concentrations of hazardous PM2.5 particles reaching 65 µg/m³, 13 times the World Health Organization’s annual guideline of 5 µg/m³, according to data from Swiss air quality monitor IQAir.
The Reuters report, citing the findings, highlights severe winter smog that blanketed major cities, particularly Lahore, turning the once “City of Gardens” into one of the world’s most hazardous urban environments. Fine particulate matter, small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, has fueled a public health crisis linked to respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and premature deaths.
Key drivers include a toxic mix of vehicle exhaust from aging fleets and poor emission standards, industrial emissions, unregulated brick kilns burning low-quality fuel, and widespread crop residue burning in Punjab’s agricultural belt. Winter temperature inversions and stagnant winds trap these pollutants close to the ground, exacerbating the haze that often reduces visibility to near zero and forces school closures and flight disruptions.
Lahore and nearby cities like Faisalabad frequently ranked among the globe’s most polluted during peak smog seasons, with daily AQI readings soaring into “hazardous” territory, sometimes exceeding 300 or even 1,000 on extreme days. Transboundary pollution from neighboring regions, including crop burning across the border, adds to the burden in this shared South Asian airshed.
Health experts warn of devastating long-term impacts. Studies estimate air pollution contributes to tens of thousands of premature deaths annually in Pakistan, shortening life expectancy by up to 3.9 years on average, and as much as seven years in heavily affected areas like Lahore. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions, face the highest risks, with hospitals reporting surges in patients during smog peaks.
Despite government efforts, including anti-smog measures, “smog war rooms,” and calls for stricter enforcement on emissions and stubble burning, critics point to gaps in implementation, weak regulations, and rapid urbanization replacing green spaces with concrete. Some officials and residents have also cited cross-border factors or economic constraints as complicating solutions.
The crisis underscores broader challenges in South Asia, where only a handful of countries worldwide met WHO air quality standards in recent years. Pakistan’s ranking comes amid ongoing debates over enforcement, with calls for accelerated shifts to cleaner transport, renewable energy, and better coordination on agricultural practices.
As temperatures rise and weather patterns shift due to climate change, experts say without sustained action, the “new normal” of toxic air could worsen, threatening public health and economic productivity for generations.
