London (The Times) — June 30, 2026: Prince William has shared a heartfelt tribute to his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, recalling treasured childhood memories as part of the official Queen Elizabeth Digital Memorial, launched to commemorate the late monarch’s centenary.
In a video message recorded at Windsor Castle, the Prince of Wales reflected on the close bond he shared with Queen Elizabeth during his school years at nearby Eton College. He described regular visits to Windsor as some of his happiest family memories, remembering quiet afternoons spent with both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

Speaking in the tribute, Prince William said, “It’s a privilege to know the late Queen better than most. Some of my fondest memories of my grandmother are from here in winter.” He added that afternoons spent sharing tea and stories with his grandparents left a lasting impression on him.
William also revealed that those family gatherings shaped one of his lifelong habits, saying, “To this day, she’s given me a love of teatime that I never knew I needed.”
The Prince further recalled watching Queen Elizabeth ride horses in Windsor Great Park, describing those moments as an opportunity to see a more private side of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. He said she appeared “off-duty, relaxed, and utterly at home,” surrounded by family, her dogs and horses.
The Queen Elizabeth Digital Memorial, introduced earlier this year by the UK Cabinet Office, preserves photographs, archival material, official records and personal recollections celebrating the Queen’s seven-decade reign. As part of the centenary project, members of the public from across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth have also been invited to submit their own memories of Queen Elizabeth II.

According to organisers, the memorial includes digitised editions of the historic Court Circular, alongside video tributes and personal stories reflecting the late monarch’s public service and personal interactions over several decades.
Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022 after a 70-year reign, the longest in British history. Since her passing, several commemorative initiatives have been launched, including plans for a permanent national memorial in London and digital archives documenting her life and legacy.
Prince William’s latest remarks offer a rare glimpse into his personal relationship with his grandmother, highlighting family traditions and private moments that remained largely unseen during her lifetime while contributing to the broader effort to preserve Queen Elizabeth II’s historical legacy.
