LOS ANGELES (The Chosun Daily) — August 11, 2026: Christopher Nolan’s epic “The Odyssey” has crossed the $1.1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, overtaking 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises” to become the director’s highest-grossing film to date.
Recent box-office reporting places The Odyssey at approximately $1.1 billion worldwide, with around $461 million generated in North America and $644 million from international markets. The milestone puts the film ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, which finished its theatrical run with about $1.085 billion worldwide.

The achievement comes after a strong theatrical run for Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya among the principal cast.
Strong Performance across International Markets
The Odyssey opened globally in July and recorded a $264 million worldwide opening weekend, giving Nolan his biggest global opening outside the Batman franchise.

The film continued to build momentum during its subsequent weeks in cinemas. Variety previously reported that it had reached $639.6 million worldwide after two weekends, including $353.2 million from international markets and $284.4 million domestically at that stage of its run.
The latest figures show that international markets have continued to account for a substantial share of the film’s overall earnings.

Recent reporting says The Odyssey has generated approximately $289 million from IMAX screenings, making it the highest-grossing IMAX release ever and moving ahead of James Cameron’s Avatar.
The result is particularly notable given that The Odyssey was designed as a large-scale theatrical experience and was filmed for IMAX. IMAX’s own corporate records had listed the film among its major 2026 releases.
Nolan’s Biggest Box-office Success
Before The Odyssey, Nolan’s highest-grossing film was The Dark Knight Rises, which earned approximately $1.085 billion worldwide.
His other major commercial successes include The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar and Oppenheimer. The latter finished its global run at around $976 million, making The Odyssey the latest addition to Nolan’s billion-dollar box-office achievements.
The new milestone further strengthens Nolan’s position as one of the most commercially successful contemporary filmmakers, while also demonstrating continued theatrical demand for large-scale original filmmaking.

About ‘The Odyssey’
Based on Homer’s ancient epic, the film follows Odysseus on his difficult journey home to Ithaca following the Trojan War.
The adaptation was released by Universal Pictures and carries an reported production budget of around $250 million. It has an R rating in the United States and runs for nearly three hours.
The film’s early theatrical performance had already established it as Nolan’s strongest opening outside the Batman series, and its latest $1.1 billion milestone now makes it the director’s biggest commercial success worldwide.
