Young Woman Who Eloped for Love Dies After Alleged Brutal Abuse by Husband in Karachi

An 18-year-old woman who had reportedly married against her family’s wishes after eloping with a man she loved has died in Karachi’s Surjani Town, allegedly as a result of severe domestic abuse inflicted by her husband.

According to police, the deceased was identified as Misbah, daughter of Muhammad Ramzan. Family members said she had eloped with a resident of Malir, identified as Shehryar, approximately four months ago and married him despite her family’s objections.

Speaking to local media, Misbah’s mother and brother, Usman, said she was the only sister among five brothers and that their father had passed away. The family stated that while living in New Karachi, Misbah became involved with Shehryar, who eventually persuaded her to run away and marry him shortly before the holy month of Ramadan.

Her mother said that after the marriage, Misbah returned home and was forgiven by her family. However, she alleged that her daughter soon began suffering physical abuse at the hands of her husband. According to the family, Shehryar repeatedly demanded money and even asked for a Honda CD-125 motorcycle.

The victim reportedly told her family that her husband claimed to be a police officer and had shown her photographs of himself in a police uniform. However, relatives questioned the claim, saying he spent most of his time at home and would occasionally leave for short periods before returning with large sums of cash.

Family members alleged that the abuse intensified over time. Misbah’s mother claimed that Shehryar threatened the family through WhatsApp messages, warning them not to file complaints and allegedly threatening violence against her sons.

According to the family, they took Misbah to Surjani Town police station seeking help, but were allegedly told the matter fell under Malir’s jurisdiction. They later sought treatment for her at a private hospital in Khuda Ki Basti.

Usman recounted that when doctors cleaned a wound on his sister’s head, tea leaves were reportedly found inside it. He alleged that Misbah had told her mother that her husband struck her on the head with a screwdriver and later poured salt and stuffed tea leaves into the wound. The family further claimed that she bore signs of abuse on various parts of her body.

The family said that shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Monday night, Misbah went to the bathroom and collapsed. By the time she was brought back to her room, she had allegedly passed away.

Police, however, stated that the woman had died before 1:00 a.m. and that authorities were not informed immediately. Officers said they received a call through the emergency helpline and found the victim dead upon arrival.

Police further stated that it took considerable effort to move the body to a hospital. Authorities said the victim’s mother was unwilling to allow a post-mortem examination or pursue legal action. Following initial legal formalities, the body was handed over to the family.

Police officials said a decision regarding the registration of a criminal case would be made following instructions from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) West. Investigators have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the death and are collecting evidence from multiple angles.
