Zardari calls for Stronger Pakistan-UN Partnership

ISLAMABAD (Radio Pakistan) — August 13, 2026: President Asif Ali Zardari has called for further strengthening Pakistan’s partnership with the United Nations, particularly in sustainable development, climate change, poverty alleviation, education and social protection.
He made the remarks during a meeting with United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan Mohamed Yahya, who paid a farewell call on the president in Islamabad on Wednesday.

President Zardari said Pakistan valued its “close and multifaceted cooperation” with the UN and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to working with the UN Country Team on national development priorities.
The president also appreciated the UN’s continued assistance in Pakistan’s polio eradication efforts and in maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition programmes, including the Benazir Nashonuma Programme.
Focus on Climate and Disaster Response
President Zardari highlighted the role of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in coordinating international humanitarian assistance and supporting Pakistan during major climate-related disasters.
He said Pakistan valued continued engagement with OCHA in a way that strengthens national systems and supports government-led disaster response.

The president also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable development and addressing the effects of climate change. He appreciated initiatives including the Living Indus Initiative and Recharge Pakistan, while expressing hope that the UN would continue supporting Pakistan’s efforts to mobilise development and climate financing.
He expressed confidence that cooperation would continue under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023–27.
Mohamed Yahya Appointed to UN Humanitarian Post
During the meeting, Mohamed Yahya informed President Zardari that he had been appointed Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at OCHA, and was expected to assume his new position in September.
The UN had announced Yahya’s appointment on June 26, 2026. According to the UN, he brings more than two decades of experience in development, humanitarian action and peacebuilding and was serving as the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan at the time of his appointment.

The UN said Yahya had also coordinated the organisation’s response to Pakistan’s 2025 floods during his assignment in the country.
President Zardari congratulated Yahya on his new assignment, conveyed his best wishes and assured him of Pakistan’s support.
The meeting comes as Pakistan and the UN continue cooperation on humanitarian assistance, climate resilience, sustainable development and social protection, with both sides expected to maintain engagement through existing development and humanitarian frameworks.
