British Airways Flight BA295 Declares Emergency Over Ireland, Returns to Heathrow

British Airways flight BA295, operating from London Heathrow to Chicago O’Hare, declared a general emergency while flying over Ireland on Monday and returned to Heathrow after making a rapid descent.

The Boeing 777-200ER, registered G-VIIA, departed Heathrow Terminal 5 at around 11:50 a.m. local time. About an hour into the flight, after reaching an altitude of approximately 37,000 feet, the aircraft began a steep descent to around 9,000 feet.

The crew also activated the international emergency transponder code 7700, indicating a general emergency.

Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft turning back towards London while maintaining a relatively low altitude. The rapid descent below 10,000 feet is consistent with procedures normally followed in response to a possible cabin pressurisation problem, although British Airways has not officially confirmed the cause.

The aircraft later entered a holding pattern, with the landing gear reportedly lowered as the crew worked to reduce fuel weight ahead of landing.

BA295 subsequently returned to Heathrow, where the aircraft landed safely. British Airways is understood to have arranged a replacement flight for passengers later in the day.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the emergency remains under investigation.
