ScrollEd Turns Textbooks Into TikTok-Style Feeds
Palo Alto startup uses AI to transform study material into short-form content

Key Developments:
- ScrollEd converts textbooks and PDFs into TikTok-style feeds.
- AI adds videos, audio, text and quizzes to study material.
(TechCrunch) — September 22, 2026: A Palo Alto-based education technology startup is developing a platform that converts textbooks and other study material into a short-form, vertical feed resembling the format used by TikTok and Instagram Reels.
ScrollEd, founded by Utsav Gupta and Rebecca Neff, is among the startups participating in TechCrunch's Startup Battlefield 200. The company is presenting its platform at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, where it aims to demonstrate an alternative way of delivering educational content to students.

The application allows users to upload text files, including PDFs and textbooks, and transforms the material into a swipeable feed. The resulting content can include AI-generated video, audio, text and interactive quizzes.
Users can swipe vertically to move between topics and swipe horizontally to explore a subject in greater depth, with quizzes incorporated into the learning experience. Recent coverage by ProPakistani described the platform as a TikTok- or Reels-style learning feed for study material.
ScrollEd co-founder Utsav Gupta told TechCrunch that the company was responding to the growing preference among younger users for short-form, vertical content.

“The younger generation is increasingly going short form, vertical feed only,” Gupta said, adding that the company wanted to “meet them where they are”.
Gupta said the platform was intended to encourage users to explore subjects beyond a single short piece of content rather than simply maximise time spent on the application.

“A short video can make you curious; following that curiosity can mean searching for another explanation or leaving the app,” he said.
Gupta and Neff, who are also students, bootstrapped ScrollEd in 2026 after noticing their own dissatisfaction with spending time scrolling online before bed. Gupta studies AI and human purpose at Stanford, while Neff studies computer science at the University of Pennsylvania, according to TechCrunch.
The company is targeting several groups, including educational institutions, corporate training programmes and individual users looking for an alternative use for short-form scrolling.
ScrollEd plans to operate on a freemium model, offering a free consumer version alongside a paid ScrollEd Pro subscription and annual licences for institutions. Institutional customers are expected to receive reports covering engagement, lesson progress and other platform data.

The startup also plans to expand its lesson library, develop a source-checking system and conduct institutional pilot programmes. It is working on technology that could eventually allow educators to assess individual learners and adapt educational material to their needs.
The platform's development comes as technology companies continue experimenting with ways to apply short-form video formats to education. Coverage published on September 21 noted that other products have also attempted to make study material more engaging through swipeable feeds, educational videos and AI-generated learning content.

ScrollEd's appearance at Startup Battlefield 200 places it among 200 early-stage companies selected by TechCrunch for its 2026 programme. The companies will exhibit at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco from October 13 to 15, with selected finalists competing on the event's main stage.
Gupta described the company's longer-term objective as “a social network that’s better for you”.
Whether the short-form social media format can consistently improve learning outcomes remains to be established. For now, ScrollEd is positioning its platform as an experiment in adapting the mechanics of scrolling feeds to educational content.
