(UNITED NATIONS/Arab News) — September 26, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has warned that any threat to the safety and sanctity of Makkah and Madinah would cross a “red line” for Pakistan, while condemning recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Sharif said Pakistan strongly condemned what he described as recent “deplorable attacks” by the Houthis against the Kingdom.
“We once again condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the recent deplorable attacks by the Houthis against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Sharif said.

He referred specifically to Saudi Arabia’s announcement that its air defences had intercepted a drone that Riyadh said was heading towards Makkah.
“The attempted drone attack on the holy city of Makkah Al-Mukarramah has outraged Muslims across the globe,” Sharif said, adding that any threat to the safety and sanctity of the Haramain Sharifain was a “red line that must never be crossed.”
“No Muslim can even dare to think of committing such a heinous act,” he added.
Saudi authorities have reported a series of missile and drone interceptions amid an escalation in attacks attributed to Yemen’s Houthi movement. The Houthis have disputed Saudi and other regional accounts of some of the reported attacks.
Sharif also reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and addressed the recently established Makkah Joint Defence Agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

He stressed that the arrangement was not directed against any particular country.
“This alliance is not directed against any country. It is a collective commitment for defence, stability and peace in the region and nothing more,” Sharif said.

The remarks came as officials from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye discussed regional security and the implementation of the defence agreement amid continuing attacks and heightened tensions in the region.
Sharif also called for diplomacy and restraint elsewhere in the region, saying major waterways including the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab should remain open to international navigation and should not become points of confrontation.
