Cockroach Janata Party Protest Gains Momentum as Student Groups Join Demonstration at Jantar Mantar

India: A protest organized by the online-driven “Cockroach Janata Party” at New Delhi’s historic demonstration site, Jantar Mantar, gained fresh momentum on Saturday after the participation of the traditional left-wing “Dafli Gang,” a group known for its activist roots in major Indian universities.

The inclusion of the student activists, commonly associated with campuses such as Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the University of Delhi (DU), has intensified the protest and sparked debate in political circles, with some observers viewing it as a potential challenge to the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Known for using drums and tambourines during demonstrations, the Dafli Gang has brought its trademark protest style to the movement. Their participation has added a distinctly left-wing tone to the gathering, featuring slogans associated with student activism and broader anti-government campaigns.

The protesters are primarily demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, while also raising concerns over unemployment, alleged examination irregularities, and perceived shortcomings in the education system. Demonstrators have chanted slogans calling for “freedom,” “change,” and greater accountability from the government.

Activists and public figures including Sonam Wangchuk, Prakash Raj, Mahua Moitra, and several other opposition voices have announced support for the protest, which organizers say is evolving into a broader youth movement transitioning from social media platforms to the streets.

The movement’s growing popularity among young people could create challenges for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), particularly if concerns surrounding education and employment continue to resonate with voters ahead of the 2029 general elections.

The protest is also being viewed as a potential platform for opposition parties, including the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and left-wing groups, to mobilize support around issues affecting students and young job seekers.

With videos and slogans from the demonstrations spreading widely across social media, the movement has attracted increasing public attention, adding a new dimension to the political debate surrounding youth concerns, education policy, and employment opportunities in India.
