Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, landed in the Iranian capital on Wednesday as part of a high-level delegation aimed at facilitating the next phase of direct talks between the United States and Iran.

Accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and senior officials, Munir was received at the airport by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to statements from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) and Iranian media.

The visit comes shortly after Pakistan successfully hosted initial rounds of US-Iran negotiations in Islamabad earlier this month. Those talks, which included a US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance and an Iranian team headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Araghchi, marked a significant de-escalation following recent regional tensions.

Pakistani officials say Munir is carrying messages from Washington and is discussing arrangements for a potential second or third round of face-to-face talks, likely to be hosted again in Islamabad in the coming days.

Pakistan has positioned itself as a neutral and trusted intermediary, leveraging its longstanding ties with both Washington and Tehran. Analysts note that Munir’s personal engagement underscores the central role of Pakistan’s military leadership in regional diplomacy at a sensitive time.

This development highlights Pakistan’s growing profile in backchannel diplomacy amid complex geopolitical dynamics involving the US, Iran, and key Gulf players.
