Five Killed in Suspected Hate Crime Shooting at San Diego’s Largest Mosque

Five men, including a heroic security guard, were fatally shot outside the Islamic Center of San Diego, in what authorities are investigating as a possible hate crime. The two teenage suspects later died by apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The shooting occurred around 11:43 a.m. at the Islamic Center of San Diego, also known as Masjid Abu Bakr, located at 7050 Eckstrom Ave. in the Clairemont neighborhood. The center houses a mosque and the Al Rashid School.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl confirmed the victims were three adult males: a security guard and two staff members. No students or teachers inside the school were harmed, thanks to the quick actions of the security guard, who prevented the attackers from entering the building.

The two suspects, teenagers aged 17 and 18, were found dead nearby. Police discovered evidence of anti-Islamic writings and hate rhetoric, leading investigators to treat the incident as a potential hate crime.

“This is a tragic day for our city,” officials said. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and community leaders have condemned the violence.

The Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in San Diego County, has announced it is closed until further notice. A reunification center was set up for families, and counseling resources are available.
