LONDON (BBC) — August 22, 2026: A wave of alleged GTA 6 leaks has created a major headache for Rockstar Games just days before the developer is due to unveil an extended look at the highly anticipated title.
Unauthorised gameplay clips and other material have circulated online in recent days, with reports suggesting the footage may have originated from an internal or playable build of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar has not publicly confirmed the authenticity of the material.

The situation has nevertheless escalated beyond social media. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has filed legal requests seeking information from Microsoft and Discord that could help identify accounts associated with the distribution of the allegedly copyrighted material. The filings were made in a New York federal court.
The requests seek information connected with accounts and online activity associated with the alleged leaker, including records held by Microsoft’s services and Discord. Microsoft has also indicated that it is cooperating with Take-Two and Rockstar in efforts to protect their intellectual property.

The legal action comes at a particularly sensitive time for Rockstar. The company has officially announced Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, which is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on August 27 before being made available through other official channels.

Rockstar has maintained an unusually tight level of secrecy around GTA 6, intensifying anticipation among fans. Former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij, who worked on earlier titles including Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas, said the company’s secrecy has traditionally been part of its appeal.
“It’s amazing that they can keep things under wraps as well as they do,” Vermeij said.
He recalled that Rockstar employees historically wanted major details kept confidential until release.
“We always wanted to keep things a secret,” he said, adding that secrecy “makes launch day so much more fun.”
The latest leaks have therefore created a contrast with Rockstar’s carefully managed promotional strategy. Fans have spent months examining even minor clues from official Rockstar posts while waiting for additional information about the game.

Video game journalist Wesley Yin-Poole said the scale of GTA 6’s development made the leaks particularly damaging for those working on the project.
“GTA 6 is an enormous endeavour,” Yin-Poole said. “It’s being built over the course a decade, essentially, with thousands of people involved.”
He added that seeing the game exposed before its intended reveal would have been difficult for the development team.

Despite the disruption, industry observers do not necessarily expect the controversy to significantly affect the game’s commercial prospects.
Yin-Poole said audiences were likely to wait for official footage and their own experience with the finished game before forming firm opinions about the leaked material.
The controversy has also raised questions about the motives of those claiming responsibility. The group associated with the leaks has reportedly framed its actions as opposition to aspects of the modern video-game business, including digital distribution practices. However, cryptocurrency-related appeals connected to the leaked material have prompted scepticism over those claims.

The reported leaks also come against the backdrop of intense anticipation surrounding GTA 6. Rockstar’s official website continues to list November 19, 2026 as the game’s release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The company has not announced a change to that schedule, and the planned August 27 extended preview remains on its official calendar.

As Vermeij put it, the long-term effect may ultimately be limited: “I think it will have no impact at all whatsoever,” he said. “People will have forgotten about it by the time the game comes out.”
