Indian Army Introduces Major Uniform Reforms, Limits Use of Colonial-Era Traditions

The Indian Army has announced sweeping changes to its uniform regulations and ceremonial practices, aiming to phase out several British-era traditions and align military identity with a more modern national framework.

Under the new uniform code, the ceremonial use of the sword, long associated with formal military parades and review ceremonies, has been restricted, with its role now reduced or removed in several official functions. The decision marks a significant shift away from colonial-era military customs.

The revised guidelines also remove the use of the term “Royal” from official military references, further distancing the force from its colonial legacy. At the same time, traditional Indian attire such as the Bandi jacket has been formally incorporated into the dress code, reflecting an emphasis on indigenous design elements.

A new winter battle jacket has also been introduced and will be gradually phased in to replace older uniform variants.

In addition to uniform changes, stricter grooming and appearance regulations have been implemented. These include tighter controls on tattoos, unauthorized facial hair, body piercings, and certain cosmetic practices.

Military officials stated that the reforms are intended to preserve discipline and tradition while removing remaining colonial influences, reshaping the force into a more contemporary and nationally defined institution.
