  • Global and Regional Impact Intensifies

Dubai/Jerusalem (Reuters) – March 05, 2026: Iran launched a wave of missiles at Israel early Thursday, sending residents into bomb shelters for protection, as the US-Israel war with Iran enters its sixth day.

The development came hours after Republican senators in Washington voted against the motion to halt the US air assault. According to a Reuters report, the move has left US President Donald Trump’s power “largely unbound” as the conflict continues to widen across the Middle East.  The Senate voted 53 to 47 not to advance the motion, with all voting against the resolution except one Republican who supported it.

As the US-Iran war widens, reports of a US submarine sinking an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka on Wednesday have made headlines, killing at least 80 people. Likewise, there are reports of NATO air defences destroying an Iranian ballistic missile being fired toward Türkiye. This is reportedly the first time Türkiye has been drawn into the conflict. However, the US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth believes there is no threat of triggering the Atlantic alliance’s collective defence clause.

On the other hand, son of the slain leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba Khamenei, has emerged as most likely to succeed. Experts suggest, Mojtaba Khamenei’s possible takeover suggests Tehran will not give in to pressure from the US and Israel’s military campaign against them, as a result of which hundreds have been killed and the global markets plunged.

On Thursday, the war has continued to paralyze shipping through the Strait of Hormuz choking the Middle East’s oil and gas flows. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has vowed to provide insurance and naval escorts for ships to contain soaring prices, as approximately 200 vessels are anchored off the coast, according to a Reuters report.

On Wednesday, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, informed Fox News that the US Navy will escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz “as soon as it can”.

On the other hand, a New York Times report has claimed the Iranian intelligence reached out to the CIA to end the war. However, a source within the Iranian intelligence has rejected the article as “absolute lies and psychological warfare in the midst of war”, as reported by Tasnim, Iran’s semi-official news agency.

Attending an event in Bangkok on Thursday, Georgieva elaborated that if the conflict is prolonged it will have the “obvious” potential to affect energy prices and market sentiments globally.

In light of recent developments, Iran has announced that three days of farewell ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, have been indefinitely postponed with no date for the funeral. The 86-year-old Supreme Leader was killed by an Israeli airstrike on Saturday. Although, Mojtaba Khamenei is believed to be the next Supreme Leader, there is no confirmation. Assembly member Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami told state TV that the candidates have been identified, but didn’t make them public.
