DUBAI/WASHINGTON (Reuters) — August 18, 2026: Iran has warned that it could adopt a more offensive military posture and take action in the Strait of Hormuz if diplomatic efforts with the United States fail, while US President Donald Trump has ruled out extending a temporary ceasefire arrangement.
The developments come as efforts to negotiate a longer-term agreement between Washington and Tehran have stalled. A June memorandum had provided a 60-day framework for negotiations on a broader settlement, including Iran’s nuclear programme and US sanctions, but the arrangement has since come under strain over control of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Iran warns of military escalation
A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran would shift toward a “fully offensive” military posture because negotiations aimed at securing a permanent end to the conflict had stalled.
The official said Iranian entities should be prepared for increased tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region.
“Iranian entities must be prepared to escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and wider region,” the official told Reuters, adding that Tehran could undertake a “timely and precise” military attack if diplomacy failed to resolve the dispute.
Control of the Strait of Hormuz remains at the heart of the deadlock between Iran and the United States.
Iran has separately been negotiating with Oman over arrangements for managing navigation through the Strait. Tehran says the two sides are close to an agreement, although Washington has rejected Iran’s interpretation of provisions concerning control of the waterway.
US rules out ceasefire extension
Asked whether Washington intended to extend the interim agreement reached in June, Trump said it would not do so.

The June memorandum had called for an immediate cessation of military operations and established a 60-day period for negotiations toward a broader agreement. The arrangement subsequently deteriorated amid disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz and other issues.
Reuters also reported that the Trump administration has pursued indirect contacts with elements of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), suggesting that diplomatic channels have not completely closed despite the public deadlock.
US special envoy Jared Kushner said discussions between Washington and different parts of the Iranian government were extensive.
“The conversations between the U.S. government and different areas of the Iranian government at all areas is probably more robust than it’s maybe ever been,”
Kushner said in an interview with Fox News Channel.

Reuters reported that tanker traffic through the waterway has slowed sharply amid the continuing tensions. On August 18, oil prices rose for a third consecutive session as markets assessed the possibility of prolonged disruption to energy supplies. Brent crude was reported at $91.76 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate stood at $85.55.
The situation has also raised concerns about shipping costs and the availability of crude supplies to international markets. Reuters reported that only a small number of vessels had passed through the Strait over the weekend, compared with normal traffic levels.
Regional diplomacy continues
Despite the worsening rhetoric between Washington and Tehran, regional diplomatic efforts are continuing.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Trump during a phone call to make maximum use of diplomacy to reduce tensions with Iran. Turkey said it hoped negotiations would continue and that Ankara would support efforts aimed at peace.

The uncertainty has already affected energy markets. Brent crude settled at $90.87 a barrel on August 17 after rising by more than $2, according to Reuters. On August 18, prices moved higher again as markets responded to the worsening outlook for US-Iran diplomacy.
