Islamabad Lights Up to Celebrate Mecca Joint Defence Agreement
Pakistan’s capital lit up on Sunday to mark the signing of the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, with Constitution Avenue and other major landmarks illuminated in the flags and colours of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
Video footage shared by the Pakistan High Commission in India showed prominent buildings illuminated at night, rows of national flags and large banners displaying the words “Makkah Joint Defence Agreement”, alongside portraits of the leaders of the three countries. Messages promoting peace, security and regional stability were also displayed.
The trilateral agreement was signed in Mecca on August 7, 2026, by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be treated as an attack against all three, while the agreement also provides for expanded defence and security cooperation.
The accord builds on the longstanding defence partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and marks a broader framework for strategic cooperation involving Türkiye.
Officials have described the agreement as an important step towards strengthening collective deterrence and enhancing regional security amid continuing geopolitical tensions.
