Malian Air Force Helicopter Reportedly Downed Near Wabaria in Gao Region

Video footage circulating on social media shows a distant burning aircraft wreck billowing thick black smoke in an arid landscape near Wabaria in Mali’s Gao Region, with claims that it depicts a Malian Air Force helicopter brought down by fighters from the Azawad Liberation Front.

The footage, shared by conflict monitoring accounts, captures the apparent aftermath of an incident in eastern Mali. Pro-rebel sources suggest the helicopter was shot down, though Malian authorities have not issued any official confirmation regarding the aircraft type, cause of the incident, or casualties as of Saturday.

The Azawad Liberation Front, a coalition formed in late 2024 by merging mainly Tuareg and Arab separatist groups including the MNLA and HCUA, seeks greater autonomy or independence for the Azawad region in northern Mali. The group has claimed recent advances against Malian forces and Russian-backed elements, including control of positions in Kidal and parts of Gao amid ongoing clashes.

This reported helicopter incident coincides with a broader escalation. On Saturday, residents and monitors reported explosions, gunfire, and attacks near Bamako’s main military base in Kati, a camp close to the international airport housing Russian mercenary forces, as well as fighting in northern cities including Gao and Kidal. Mali’s army described the assaults as coordinated actions by unidentified armed “terrorist” groups targeting strategic sites nationwide, with fighting ongoing in multiple locations.

Mali’s northern regions have faced persistent instability since the 2012 Tuareg rebellion, exacerbated by jihadist insurgencies and operations involving Malian troops alongside foreign partners. Previous claims by the Azawad Liberation Front of downing Malian aircraft or helicopters using drones or ground fire have emerged in recent years, though independent verification is often difficult in the remote Sahel terrain.
