While the dramatic rescue has inspired many families still searching for missing loved ones, emergency authorities and humanitarian organizations say the crisis has now entered a new phase focused on relief, healthcare and reconstruction.
The powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, caused widespread destruction across Venezuela, particularly in the coastal state of La Guaira. According to the latest official figures, at least 2,295 people have been killed, more than 11,000 injured, and approximately 13,000 people displaced, while thousands remain unaccounted for. Rescue operations continue, although officials acknowledge that the chances of finding additional survivors diminish with each passing day.

The most uplifting development came when 43-year-old security guard Hernán Gil was rescued from beneath the ruins of a collapsed seven-storey building in Catia La Mar. International rescue specialists from Venezuela, Chile, the United States, Portugal, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Mexico worked together for several days before reaching him through a narrow tunnel.
“This is truly a miracle,” Gil’s wife, Gusbimar Gonzalez, told AFP after learning her husband had been rescued alive.

Cristian Vera, leader of the Chilean rescue team, explained the complexity of the operation, saying: “It wasn’t easy to reach the exact spot where the victim was located.” According to AFP, rescuers supplied Gil with water and oxygen through narrow tubes before successfully extracting him.
Despite the successful rescue, emergency workers caution that similar outcomes have become increasingly rare. Many damaged buildings in La Guaira have already been marked as containing no detectable signs of life.

Reporting from the disaster zone, Al Jazeera correspondent Zein Basravi said the emergency response is gradually transitioning toward humanitarian assistance.
“The emergency response is set to move away from rescue and recovery into a very different phase of this disaster, which will see more relief work, more humanitarian work needed on the ground,” Basravi reported.
Health experts have warned that overcrowded shelters, damaged medical infrastructure and limited healthcare resources could trigger outbreaks of infectious diseases and complicate treatment for thousands of injured survivors. Venezuela’s healthcare system had already been facing significant challenges before the earthquakes, increasing concerns about its capacity to manage the crisis.

International organizations have expanded their appeals for assistance. The World Food Programme has requested approximately $50 million to provide emergency food assistance for around 500,000 people over the next three months. Meanwhile, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimates that physical damage caused by the earthquakes could reach $6.7 billion, highlighting the scale of reconstruction required.
