Modi to Become India’s Longest-Serving Elected PM on June 10, Surpassing Nehru

India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to achieve a new milestone on June 10, becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister of India by surpassing the post-election tenure of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Modi, who was sworn in for his third term on June 9, 2024, will cross Nehru’s record of continuous service as an elected head of government following the 1952 general elections. Nehru’s post-1952 tenure lasted approximately 4,397 days until his death in 1964.

This comes as Modi completes over 12 years as Prime Minister since first taking office on May 26, 2014. His uninterrupted tenure has already made him the second-longest serving Prime Minister in a single continuous stint, after Nehru’s overall record of 16 years and 286 days from 1947 to 1964.

Modi has secured three consecutive electoral victories in 2014, 2019, and 2024.

While Nehru remains the longest-serving PM overall including pre- and post-independence periods, Modi’s achievement is being highlighted as a unique record for an elected leader in independent India’s parliamentary democracy.
