Dubai (Dawn News) – March 05, 2026: Mojtaba Khamenei emerges as frontrunner to succeed late father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Iran’s new leader.
Khamenei, 56, survived the US-Israeli aerial blitz of his country that claimed the lives of Iran’s top leadership including the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, on Saturday.

Speaking with Reuters, Iranian sources confirmed Mojtaba Khamenei was not in Tehran during the strike that destroyed the Supreme Leader’s compound – claiming the lives of the 86-year-old Supreme Leader, his wife, another son, and senior Iranian military and leadership figures.
As fresh explosions shook the capital on the sixth day of the US-Israel war against Iran, the state announced its decision to indefinitely postpone three days of farewell ceremonies and provided no official date for the funeral of its slain leader.
According to a Reuters report, the Assembly of Experts tasked with selecting Iran’s new leader is “close to a conclusion” and will announce its decision soon. Likewise, Assembly member Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami informed state TV on Wednesday, but didn’t name any names.

Aside from Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Hassan Khomeini grandson of Iran’s first Supreme Leader Imam Khomeini is also said to be in the running.
Critics believe Mojtaba Khamenei, born in 1969, lacks the clerical credentials to become the new Supreme Leader as he has never held a formal government position, but has been seen as the “gatekeeper” to his father, according to a Dawn News report.
On the other hand, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Khamenei in 2019 while claiming that he represented the Supreme Leader in “an official capacity” despite not being elected into a government position.

Another political leader to emerge as a central figure in the wake of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s assassination is Ayatollah Alireza Arafi who was appointed to an interim three-member leadership council to manage state affairs alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei.
