North Korea Launches Multiple Ballistic Missiles into Sea of Japan

North Korea fired a salvo of approximately 10 unidentified ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan (also known as the East Sea) on Saturday, prompting Japan to issue an emergency alert, according to military officials in Seoul and Tokyo.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported detecting the launches from the Sunan area near Pyongyang around 1:20 p.m. local time. The projectiles flew eastward into the sea off North Korea’s eastern coast. Japan’s Defense Ministry confirmed the activity, describing at least one as a suspected ballistic missile that appeared to fall outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone after a short flight.

The incident marks North Korea’s first confirmed ballistic missile test of 2026 following earlier activity in January, and comes amid ongoing joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, known as Freedom Shield. Pyongyang has repeatedly condemned such drills as provocative rehearsals for invasion, often responding with weapons demonstrations.

No immediate reports indicated the missiles posed a direct threat to populated areas or crossed into Japanese airspace, though Japan’s public alert system was activated as a precaution, a standard response to North Korean launches in the region.

The launches follow a period of heightened naval and missile activity by North Korea, including recent cruise missile tests from a new destroyer observed by leader Kim Jong Un.
