Pakistan Temporarily Reopens Torkham Border for Repatriation of Stranded Afghan Refugees

The Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan has been partially reopened on the Pakistani side, allowing stranded Afghan refugees to return home, according to Afghan government officials and multiple reports.

The limited reopening follows nearly a month of closure triggered by recent border clashes, including an incident in which a Pakistani guard was wounded. Trade and general pedestrian movement remain fully suspended, with the crossing open primarily for the one-way repatriation of undocumented Afghans from Pakistan.

Pakistani authorities have described the move as part of a controlled, phased, and “dignified” repatriation process that began around March 26. Officials, including those from the Federal Investigation Agency, NADRA, customs, and logistics bodies, coordinated to facilitate the returns under tight security. Hundreds of Afghan nationals, many of whom had been stranded for weeks amid difficult conditions, started crossing with police escort.

Afghan border police confirmed the reopening on the Pakistani side, noting it enables migrants to enter Afghanistan. Humanitarian organizations have mobilized support at reception points inside Afghanistan, stressing the need for safe returns, particularly for vulnerable families, children, and those facing shortages of food and shelter.

The development fits into Pakistan’s broader policy of deporting over 700,000 undocumented Afghans, which has intensified in recent months. Earlier attempts at temporary openings for returns occurred amid ongoing diplomatic friction with Taliban officials.

Torkham serves as a vital trade and transit route, but it has faced repeated closures due to security incidents and political tensions. Commercial traffic has been halted for several months, leading to significant economic losses on both sides. Recent skirmishes, including exchanges of fire, have further complicated normalization efforts.

No timeline has been announced for a full reopening to trade or unrestricted travel. The situation continues to evolve as diplomatic engagements between the two sides proceed.
