PARIS (Al Jazeera) — June 9, 2026: Acclaimed French-Iranian author, illustrator, and filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, best known for her autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis, has died at the age of 56, according to statements released by her family and French authorities.
Satrapi’s family said she died of “sadness” a little over a year after the death of her husband, Swedish producer, actor, and screenwriter Mattias Ripa. No further medical details were publicly disclosed.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the renowned artist, saying: “Her passing marks the loss of a leading figure in French culture and an artist devoted to freedom, whose work carried a universal message and earned her immense international renown.”
Born in Rasht, Iran, in 1969 and raised in Tehran, Satrapi drew heavily from her personal experiences during the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War. Her landmark graphic memoir Persepolis, first published in 2000, chronicled her childhood, exile, and return to Iran, becoming one of the most widely read graphic novels in the world.
The memoir was later adapted into the award-winning animated film Persepolis, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Throughout her career, Satrapi remained deeply engaged with questions of identity, freedom, displacement, and cultural understanding. In a 2007 interview with Variety, she said: “I come from a country where a woman is worth half a man. I never thought I had one leg less just because I was a woman.”
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival about Persepolis, Satrapi also said: “What we wanted to say is, if these people scare you, look closer: they have parents, they have lovers, they have hope, they have stories.”
