Trump Floats Renaming Strait of Hormuz to ‘Trump Strait’

President Donald Trump on Wednesday proposed renaming the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” claiming the waterway is now under U.S. control amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote: “Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The suggestion comes as the U.S. asserts dominance over the critical oil chokepoint connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, through which a significant share of the world’s energy supplies traditionally pass. Trump has repeatedly claimed American forces control the strait, though shipping traffic remains well below pre-war levels and the waterway continues to be contested.

The proposal follows a pattern of geographic rebranding by the president. Earlier in his term he directed the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” and more recently ordered Lake Ontario redesignated “Lake America.” Those changes have largely been rejected by other countries.
