GENEVA – Humanitarian Toll on Women and Girls
April 18, 2026: A United Nations gender equality agency has reported that the Gaza conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 38,000 women and girls, highlighting what it describes as an unprecedented humanitarian toll on civilians.
According to UN Women, the figures cover the period between October 2023 and December 2025 and reflect what it calls a severe gendered impact of the war.

Sofia Calltorp, the agency’s head of humanitarian action, said: “Women and girls accounted for a proportion of deaths far higher than those observed in previous conflicts in Gaza,” she told reporters in Geneva.
She further stated: “They were individuals with lives and with dreams.”

UN agencies also report widespread displacement, with around one million women and girls affected. Health infrastructure has suffered extensive damage, limiting access to essential services such as maternal care.
The World Health Organization has indicated that over 500,000 women in Gaza lack access to critical healthcare, including antenatal and postnatal services.

UNICEF, in parallel reporting, stated that at least 214 children were killed in the last six months, underscoring continued civilian vulnerability.
