WISCONSIN (wkow.com) — August 19, 2026: A measles outbreak in southwestern Wisconsin has spread to Grant County, with health authorities confirming two cases linked to infections previously identified in Iowa and Lafayette counties.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and Grant County Health Department confirmed the two cases on August 18, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the regional outbreak to 36, alongside three probable cases.

The outbreak is currently centred on Grant, Iowa and Lafayette counties. Iowa County has recorded the largest number of confirmed cases, followed by Lafayette County, according to state health authorities.

Most Cases reported among Unvaccinated People

Health officials said a large majority of the cases have occurred among people who were not vaccinated against measles.

According to the information provided by local health officials, more than half of the affected people are children between the ages of 5 and 17. Two people have required hospitalisation.

Wisconsin DHS has identified people who are unvaccinated as being at particular risk as the outbreak continues.

The agency said the two Grant County cases are epidemiologically connected to cases in Iowa and Lafayette counties, indicating that the newly confirmed infections are part of the existing regional outbreak rather than an unrelated cluster.

Health Officials warn about Complications

Local health officials have stressed that measles can cause serious complications, particularly among vulnerable patients.

Carla Belken of Grant Regional Health Care said the disease should not be considered harmless.

“It’s not completely benign, and that’s the one thing we really want to impress upon the public,” Belken said, adding that measles can lead to complications affecting vision, hearing and the brain and can, in severe cases, be fatal.

Health authorities also warn that measles is highly contagious. The virus can remain suspended in the air for a period after an infected person coughs or sneezes, allowing exposure even when the infected individual is no longer present.

“This is completely vaccine-preventable at 97% efficacy,” she said, urging people who are concerned about their vaccination status to check their records, particularly ahead of the new school year.

Wisconsin health authorities identify the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine as the primary method of preventing measles infection. State surveillance data has previously shown that measles cases are concentrated among people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.
