Wingtip Collision at Mumbai Airport Involving Air India and IndiGo Flights
India: A minor ground incident took place this evening at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport when the right wingtips of two Airbus A320 passenger aircraft came into contact during taxiing operations.
The aircraft involved were Air India flight AI2732, operating from Mumbai to Coimbatore with registration VT-TYF, which was pushing back from its stand and beginning to taxi for departure, and IndiGo flight 6E791, arriving from Hyderabad with registration VT-IFV, which was taxiing after landing.
According to statements from both airlines and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the wingtips brushed against each other on the taxiway. No injuries occurred to any passengers or crew members on either flight, and all passengers were safely disembarked. Both aircraft were immediately returned to their respective bays and grounded pending detailed technical inspections and damage assessment.
Air India reported that its aircraft sustained wingtip damage, resulting in a delay for the Coimbatore flight, while IndiGo confirmed the contact during post-arrival taxiing and noted that its aircraft is now undergoing necessary maintenance checks. Both carriers emphasized that passenger safety remained their foremost priority and are cooperating fully with authorities.
The DGCA has initiated a formal investigation into the incident, with officials present at the airport to examine the circumstances. The event has once again drawn attention to the challenges of ground movement coordination and apron management at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs, particularly during periods of simultaneous pushback and arrival activity.
