The controversy over Punjab's reported purchase of a luxury Gulfstream aircraft raises a fundamental question: how should governments spend taxpayers' money?

In early 2026, reports emerged that the Punjab government had acquired a 2019 Gulfstream GVII-G500, with its value reported at approximately Rs11 billion or more.

Transparency International Pakistan also raised questions about the procurement process.

The Punjab government should answer some very basic questions.

What was the exact purchase price? Who approved the purchase? Was competitive procurement followed? Who was the seller? How much is being spent on pilots, crew, fuel, insurance, hangarage; and annual maintenance?

These are not merely political questions. They are questions about public money.

Now Compare It With Ontario

The comparison with Ontario, Canada, is particularly interesting.

In April 2026, Ontario Premier Doug Ford's government purchased a Bombardier Challenger 650 for C$28.9 million—approximately Rs5.63 billion.

Whereas

Punjab Govt  aircraft: approximately Rs11 billion+

The reported Punjab aircraft, therefore, costs roughly twice as much as the Ontario aircraft.

But the more important difference came after the purchases.

The Ontario government faced strong public criticism over the aircraft. Premier Doug Ford eventually reversed the decision and sold the aircraft back to Bombardier for the same purchase price.

The lesson is not that every government aircraft is necessarily unjustified.

The lesson is accountability.

What About Punjab?

Punjab is a province where millions of people struggle with basic necessities and where government resources are desperately needed for hospitals, schools, roads, water, transport, and other public services.

That does not automatically mean Punjab can not own an aircraft.

But spending approximately Rs11 billion or more on one demands an exceptionally high level of transparency.

The government should publish the complete procurement record and operating costs.

If the purchase was proper, show the documents.

If the aircraft is genuinely required for government business, explain the requirement.

And if the annual operating cost is reasonable, publish the figures.

Public money can not be treated like private money.

The Real Question

The real issue is not simply Punjab's aircraft.

It is the attitude toward taxpayers.

Ontario's Premier faced public criticism over a Rs5.63 billion aircraft and reversed the decision.

Punjab faces questions over an aircraft reported at Rs11 billion or more.

The people of Punjab deserve the same basic principle that taxpayers everywhere deserve:

Transparency before justification.

Accountability before arrogance.

The Punjab government should, therefore, stop treating the aircraft controversy as merely political criticism and answer the simple question that taxpayers are entitled to ask:

How much did this aircraft really cost Punjab—and how much will it cost the people of Punjab every year?
